News of SBI Recovering 235 Crore as penalty Over MAB From Poor Accounts turns out to be fake!

From the past few days Some Media Outlets, Opposition Leaders & Intellectuals trying to prove that this govt. is stealing money from the accounts of poor on the name of penalty on those accounts where account holders Being failed to maintain Minimum Balance.

A few days ago an RTI based report published by several media houses that “SBI collects Rs. 235 crores in Minimum Balance fine”.

According to this report, State Bank of India (SBI) has realized Rs 235.06 crore as penalty from 388.74 lakh accounts for not maintaining monthly average balance in the first quarter of the current fiscal.

As per an application filed by Neemuch-based RTI activist Chandrashekhar Gaud, “An amount of Rs 235.06 crore has been realized from our 388.74 lakh accounts which did not maintain monthly average balance in the first quarter ended June 30,” SBI said in its reply.

After This News flashed out some Newsportals, facebook pages & opposition tried their best to prove that this amount is being deducted from the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan yojna accounts & Students Accounts which mean govt. Is looting the poor. Here are some examples of such fake news.

This one from Biju Janta Dal M.P. T Sathapaty –

Gujarat Congress President & Former Union Minister too –

lol From CPI M –

And Of course some silly & unverified WhatsApp forwards –

But In This Process, Everybody failed to observe another part of reply of RTI filed which clearly says that,

State Bank Of India has not revealed the categories of accounts on which the fine has been levied for non-compliance with its minimum balance requirements

But the Media & opposition hide this fact & presented the whole report as if SBI Has fined the poor & students holding PMJDY accounts & Basix saving Accounts. After this controversy, SBI in clarified the whole situation via tweets from their official twitter handle. they tweeted,

It is clarified that Savings Bank accounts such as Prime Minister’s Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), Small accounts and Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) accounts are exempt from MAB requirement and no charges are recovered from these accounts. The Bank has around 40 cr Savings Bank accounts, of which 13 cr accounts are under the exempted category. Customers have the option to convert their existing savings accounts to BSBD account, free of cost

So according to clarification by SBI no PMJDY Account & Basic saving account has been Charged for non-maintenance of Minimum Balance. such accounts are being held by poor & students.

The Narrative of spreading half truth & propaganda to damage the reputation of India is the primary target of opposition nowadays. Hence we must not believe on such reports without authentic source & knowledge.
